Possible early depection of SCP-9701 (left).
ITEM #:
9701
CONTAINMENT CLASS:
KETER
Special Containment Procedures: The entity is currently uncontained. Public sightings should be covered up as per standard procedure.
Description: SCP-9701 is an anomalous member of the Leporidae familiy that is capable of Level 3 reality bending. The only confirmed physical details are that the entity has white fur and red eyes. SCP-9701 migrates between the Earth and the Moon regularly. This behavior is unexplained.
Researchers have identified 118 likely SCP-9701 sightings since 2000, with 71 of those being confirmed. Of the 71 confirmed SCP-9701 sightings, 34 of them occurred in proximity to a natural disaster, 47 were in rural areas, and at least 20 involved direct interactions with humans. Sightings have decreased steadily since 2000, with a particularly steep decline since the start of the Foundation's investigation, indicating that SCP-9701 may be aware of its observation.
In addition to contemporary accounts, mythical accounts throughout the world match the description of SCP-9701. The veracity of these accounts, however, cannot be confirmed; they should be considered coincidental for the time being.

Notes
28, Dec, 2004
Meulaboh, Indonesia
Locals from the city outskirts reported speaking with a white hare that left a basket near their camp. Humanitarian workers initially dismissed this as a post-traumatic hallucination until one of them captured video of the entity mid-flight.
Witnesses refused to provide specifics about SCP-9701 when interrogated by the Foundation. Class B amnestics were administered.
30, August, 2005
Louisiana Bayou, U.S.
One self-identified disaster volunteer made a social media post about a rabbit being spotted conversing with locals. The entity fled when the worker attempted to record SCP-9701 with his phone.
The worker promptly mounted a two-day hunt for the rabbit with a group of followers; all involved were lost in the Bayou, presumed dead. No cover-up procedures were required.
9, Nov, 2005
Baltimore, U.S.
West Baltimore residents began trading a suspicious and unseasonal amount of chocolate eggs. CCTV footage spotted a rabbit resembling SCP-9701 in the area.
All eggs were confiscated for review. No anomalous details noted.
2, June, 2008
Chirripó, Costa Rica
Field Agents in San Jose reported that a group of hikers befriended a rabbit on Cerro Chirripó. Apart from its presence at the summit of a mountain to which it is not indigenous, no anomalous characteristics were noted. One hiker said that the rabbit was "strangely thoughtful; I think he enjoys the sunset."
Field agents refused to provide the names of the hikers. The agents were accordingly demoted.
Addendum-9701-2: Interview Log
Foreword: SCP-9701 has recently been captured by Mobile Task Force Gamma-4 during a Lunar expedition. The following is a transcript of Dr. Huffard's interview with SCP-9701.
[BEGIN]
Dr. Huffard clears his throat as Agent Cortez sets SCP-9701 down. The entity sniffs the table.
Dr. Huffard: It is, um, 1/9/2009. I am Dr. Huffard, and the interviewee is SCP-9701. Now, SCP-9701, could you please begin by stating your name?
SCP-9701 looks at Dr. Huffard, blinks, and turns around. He sighs.
Dr. Huffard: We are aware that you can speak. Please answer the question. It is in your best interest to cooperate. Next question: Why do you move between Earth and the Moon?
SCP-9701 wiggles its nose and stares at the table. Dr. Huffard stays silent. The entity jumps off the table.
Dr. Huffard: (whispered) Are we, uh, sure we got the right rabbit?
Agent Cortez: Is there more than one rabbit on the Moon?
Huffard and Cortez stare at the rabbit in silence.
Dr. Huffard: Fair point.
SCP-9701 defecates on the floor. Huffard nods his head slowly.
Dr. Huffard: I think we can end this interview.
[END]
Addendum-9701-3: Dr. Huffard's Status Report
Dr. Huffard 5/5/09
Since the capture of the suspected SCP-9701, no further sightings have been reported, indicating that this is the true SCP-9701. To confirm, we let SCP-9701 loose outside the facility for a few minutes yesterday (with Scranton reality anchors on stand-by). Nothing happened. It did not flee, it did not change behavior, it is just a rabbit. Whatever the reason, SCP-9701 is no longer an anomaly. To all tests and all observations, SCP-9701 is an 8-year-old, 47-centimeter, 2-kilogram, white Japanese hare (Lepus brachyurus) with red eyes under Foundation custody. The research team is trying to uncover the cause of this change. Personally, I wonder if, perhaps, it’s our obsession with categories and boxes that has somehow turned the anomalous mundane…
I'll update the entry once my team decides how to move forward,
-Dr. Huffard
